DF Kickstarter Update #1: A pretty damn important note

This note from SJG CEO Phil Reed provides guidance on backing the project and supporting GURPS ongoing investment even if the shipping of the physical DF boxed set is too much money.

This entire project – from a fan’s perspective – should be views as a semi-binding straw poll on GURPS’ funding level within SJG. Big success? Well, they’ll do more of these. Fizzle? Sorry, nice knowing you.

NO SJG STAFFER HAS SAID SUCH. But look at Steve Jackson’s statement in my interview with him about how being a private company means he can do what he wants to, not what is necessarily something an MBA would tell you to do.

So: if you can’t afford, or don’t want, the physical DF boxed set, at least consider Pyramid!

Or, in Phil’s word . . .

Thanks, everyone, for making this such a strong project launch. We appreciate your enthusiasm for the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game, and your early support means a lot to all of us here at Steve Jackson Games.

We understand the concerns that many of you outside of the United States have about shipping costs, but we’re taking the lessons of the Ogre Designer’s Edition to heart. International shipping, as many will tell you, is brutally expensive, and we must use realistic shipping estimates.

Still, even if you decide not to support the project to receive a copy of the printed game, there are ways to join the project and completely avoid shipping. One of the best ways to participate and dodge pricey international shipping costs is to back the project at the No Reward level and then add-on a one-year subscription to Pyramid. That pledge comes to $71 and scores you one year — twelve issues — of Pyramid and any unlocked bonus PDFs. Backing the project in this way shows your interest in the game — and GURPS overall — and, if we succeed, you’ll have the chance to buy the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game from your favorite local game store in 2017 after we release the game to distributors.

Regardless of how you choose to support the project — a small pledge, one of the higher reward levels, or posting on blogs and forums — you are making the Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game a reality.

If you have any questions at all, please leave us a comment and one of us will answer as soon as possible.

  1. Interestingly, I'd already had something sorta like this scratched out in notes – a diluted version of GURPS Fantasy that dialed into only the essentials. I even went so far as to reduce pre-gen classes attacks to the mere basics – the Barbarian got "Savage Axe Attack" – a pre-calc'd AOO:Determined with EE: Strong, rolled into a single stat block. The Rogue got their "back stab" as "AOO:Determined, TA:Vitals, EE:Strong" kind of thing.

I didn't devote a lot of time to digitizing it (guess I should get on that in light of what's going on now). If this works out to be anything like that, I will be pretty stoked, since that means I was actually on to something!

  2. Yes I will probably have to do this. Other option would be to offer the PDFs at $35 with rewards for stretch goals included.

Or someone to mule the boxes back to Australia as luggage.
