Mission X: The Dungeon Fantasy of Modern Action – Complete and Powered by GURPS

If you’ve ever looked at the Dungeon Fantasy RPG and thought “this is what GURPS should feel like for fantasy – complete, focused, and fast at the table,” then Mission X is going to make you pretty happy.

Mission X is 100 % complete and self-contained. You do not need the Basic Set, nor any other GURPS book, to play. Everything lives inside the Mission X line. Just like Dungeon Fantasy took the GURPS engine, stripped out the parts that slow down dungeon crawls, and gave you ready-to-run fantasy action, Mission X does the exact same thing for modern action.

Mission X keeps the elegant 3d6 roll-under core that GURPS fans know and understand. Every rule is stress-tested with actual play or reference to the genres we want to play: fiction like Stargate SG-1, Aliens, XCOM, Rainbow Six, and Old Man’s War. The result is a system that feels like the modern-action counterpart to Dungeon Fantasy – streamlined, lethal, and tuned for the table instead of the textbook.

Consolidated skills (65–70 instead of the usual sprawl). Reorganized traits. A scaling damage system that makes firearms feel like firearms and melee properly dangerous up close. Faster character creation. Combat that runs in minutes instead of hours while still rewarding smart positioning and tactics.

It’s exactly the same philosophy animating the Dungeon Fantasy RPG, other Powered by GURPS titles, and that Savage Worlds uses with its genre books – take a great core engine and rebuild every subsystem so the game sings in its intended flavor. Mission X just kinda takes it to 11 for elite operators, first-contact horror, desperate last stands on distant moons, and heroic extractions.

GURPS veterans will feel instantly at home. New players will be at the table and shooting bad guys in the face in under an hour. Hopefully very much under an hour: We’re aiming for that same “concept to table in 10-15 minutes” speed the Delvers to Grow books delivered.. This is Powered by GURPS evolved to run like the high-speed, low-drag operations you want to emulate.

Welcome to Mission X.

Over the next weeks I’ll be making posts talking about the different chapters, the game development, what MX is … and what it’s not. Please stay tuned! If you want to follow on Kickstarter so that you will be on board immediately when it launches, please click here to jump over to the promo page!
