Alternate Felltower: Finally some loot!

We investigated and cleared out two levels of an old keep. I think we wiped the floor with about 20-24 well-equipped hobgoblins and goblins.

The initial entry was complicated by some truly awful and repeated rolls on my part – back to back crit fails and falling into a pit. Nonetheless, it could have been a lot worse. We made some accidentally superior tactical decisions, and honestly we fought a lot of goblins who were simply no match for us. So it wasn’t a terribly stressful delve, and we defeated these guys in detail and walked away with a bunch of good stuff.

  • 24 dead or incapacitated goblins = 6 small gold coins ($120), 195 silver coins, 176 copper coins ($17.6); 24 short bows ($1150), 23 cheap small shields ($920), 23 long knives ($2208-2760), 24×6 regular arrows, 24×5 bodkins.
  • Hobgoblin Torturer: Light Mail armor suit (no face); leather mask (destroyed), Large Falchion ($400), Medium, fine, ornate +1 fine balanced shield, Plate Helmet (needs some repair), Poker, Ornate+1 Segmented Plate Breastplate (has some magic, minimum $850, likely ), 6 gold coins (small, $120) and 12 silver.
  • Balgron the Fat: Crossbow (ST 19), Large Knife, 1 Healing Potion (Minor), 250 silver, 2000 ($200) copper, and a Magical Wand
  • Assorted barrels of cheap wine, beer; more provisions.

There are other levels here that we have yet to clear, but this wasn’t bad. We will be getting some of the gear as usable items.

I think in the end we’ll wind up walking with a few usable items plus $1345 each. Plus a good shield, magic armor, and an unknown magic wand.

For me, that would bring my cash holdings to about $2350. The shield is likely to become mine (I’m the primary shield user) which will give me +1 to shield skill. I’ll return my own very expensive shield (Medium fine buckler, $600) to the pot, which will turn into a $480 trade-in, as it were. I also need to see if I can eke out money for something like a Brigandine (DR 5) with Lighten 1, which would run me $2,590 but keep me in happy encumbrance land. I could really use more DR on my arms and legs, but to not hurt my Move. Having Move 7 yields me a 2d+5 shield rush, which is a freaking awesome hello, how you doing to get to the battle line with some panache.

Even so: light leather (DR 1) leggings and sleeves ($62, 7.5 lbs) could give way to light mail (DR 3/1) or heavy leather (DR 2) leggings and sleeves ($625 and 15 lbs). My core armor other than the head is 28.7 lbs; I really can’t increase too much there and not pay the mobility price. Armor Mastery and another level of ST (requires 11 points; I have 7) might be the go-to. That would allow me to basically increase my core loadout to about 38 lbs, which if I can afford lighten ($2,000 for a full suit) as an enchant, puts me within shouting range of a full suit of Brigandine. I might also be able to piecemeal my way there, with Armor Mastery and maybe an enchanted breastplate, perhaps. Don’t really have the cash for it. But I might just need to upgrade to Heavy Leather legs and arms (which will turn into DR 3 with armor mastery) which will run me $200, and then take my remaining $2,000 and pick up the brigandine body armor (DR 6 with Armor mastery). That’s 36 lbs, which with an eventual +1 ST will keep me at Move 7.

Then I think the next target is probably a full suit of plate with lighten. It’s about $10K, but would give me DR 7 pretty much everywhere at 45 lbs total weight.
